Play Soccer In Truckee

Thank you

Welcome New and Returning Truckee AYSO Referees!

Hi all! We need your help!

Volunteering as a referee is a great way to give back to the Truckee soccer community that works with YOUR schedule! You can pick up games whenever you can - with our easy scheduling system, you simply choose the games you are able to referee. And yes, you can referee your own child's games (with limited exceptions during the Truckee Cup tournament)!

We recognize that becoming a Referee can be intimidating and we are here for you. At AYSO we foster a culture of positive coaches, positive spectators, and fun for kids and adults alike. We keep things comfortable for you, no matter your experience level. Whether it’s refereeing 8U kids, being an Assistant Referee (AR) or being a center Referee for our older kids, we need you!

Youth Referees: Kids as young as 12 can become a certified AYSO Referee, and becoming a Youth Referee is a great way to foster knowledge of the game, independent thinking, decision-making skills, and to have fun. We encourage Youth Referees to sign up with a friend(s) if possible (as it's always nice to have built-in camaraderie on the field) but it's not necessary.

Signup as a volunteer Referee here, or email [email protected] to learn more.

Our Referee Support Team

Our Referee Administrator, Paul Raymore, is excited to grow the pool of certified Referees available for AYSO games each season, while nurturing and supporting our returning Referees. You can reach Paul by email at [email protected]

Our long-time Referee Instructor, Steve Anderson, is extremely motivated to put a trained referee at every game. Steve is a Referee Trainer, Coach, and dedicated Truckee soccer parent. You can reach Steve by email with any questions, any time, at [email protected].

Our entire Referee Support Team is excited to work with our youth and parents to continue to take our referee program to the next level. We are constantly refining our incentives for youth and adult referees and look forward to hosting multiple Referee meetings this season - a chance to come together, catch up on updates to Laws of the Game, and socialize with food and fun.

New Referee Mentorship Program

We want to ensure all new referees are able to take the field with confidence, so we've implemented a mentorship program where new Referees will work at least three (3) games with an experienced Mentor Referee. Typically you will start out as an Assistant Referee (AR) working the sideline for an experienced Referee. When comfortable to step into the center, we will make sure you have an experienced Referee (or two) on the sideline with you for your first few games!

Only when you feel comfortable refereeing on your own will we set you loose to choose your own assignments. And we'll still provide support and check-ins throughout your first season.

Help

Please email or call us if you have any issues working through the online courses, registering, problems with AYSOU, or any questions. We know it's a lot to get through at first (you only have to do most steps once!) and we are happy to help you navigate the steps.

Become a Referee

How to Become a Truckee AYSO Referee in 4 easy steps

Step 1 – Register as an AYSO Volunteer

All referees must register as volunteers annually. Youth volunteers (ages 10-17) will need a parent or guardian to complete the online volunteer process for them. Register online as a Volunteer with AYSO at www.truckeeayso.org, follow the links and fill out the volunteer registration form and background check. NEW this year is the fun of getting your fingerprints taken. Come out to the new Rec Center coach meetings on Thursday 8/18, and give up yo' prints! It's to keep the kids safe!!

Step 2 – Complete Volunteer classes (~3.5 hours online)

All new referees must complete AYSO volunteer training:

Step 3 – Complete online Referee training (2.5 hours)

All new Referees must complete the "Regional Referee" course requirements to earn their Regional Referee badge. Take the course called "Regional Referee - Online + In-Person Companion Course (2 part bundle)". Complete all chapters, take the Final Exam, then download and print your Certificate of Completion.

Follow these steps to access the course:

  1. See the previous step to access the "Training Library"
  2. In the middle, find "Refereering", and click "View Courses"
  3. In the middle, find "Regional Referee - Online + In-Person Companion Course (2 part bundle)", and click "Enroll"

We will provide in-person training coupled with the online Regional Referee Training Course. The in-person trainings will be short, 2 to 2.5 hour trainings consisting of basic field training, recap of the online training, and a massive bonanza of gear pickup.

The trainings will meet at Riverview Sports Park Pavilion, Truckee, CA at 5:30pm for an Assistant-Referee (AR) flag recap and field positioning. Then we'll move to a TBD meeting room at the Truckee Airport for a brief recap of your online course.

You must bring:

  • Printed copy of your Certificate of Completion of Online Regional Referee Course
  • A pair of tennis shoes
